When you join our meetings you will be amazed: You can meet the world in a Kreuzberg restaurant! These are the nationalities who meet on Tuesdays: US, British, Italian, Spanish, Ukrainian, Georgian, Polish, Syrian, Russian, French, Japanese, Korean, and all of those I have forgotten to mention, and, of course, German, all peacefully united to talk and make friends. So why don´t you join us next Tuesday?

At our last meeting, we had members from all corners of the world: US, Britain, France, Ukraine, South Korea, South Africa, Georgia and Germany. All of us love to get information about foraign countries, their culture, their history and their current situation.

So I learned a lot about Georgia, a lot of facts I did not learn about. Georgia is situated at the Black Sea, south of Russia. It has a great history, starting long before the history of most European states. It has a language and writing of its own which is far different from any other languages and writing. In some cases, when we have to form a sentence, in Georgian language its contents can be skimmed into one word. The letters are totally different from what Latin or Kyrillic letters look like.

While the Soviet Union existed, Georgia was a part of this empire, but regained its independency after the Soviet Union fell apart. Still, Russia is trying to keep its influence, by military and economic means, e.g. by cutting off gas supplies.

If you are as keen on learning more about different nations and conversing in English as I am, why don´t you join us on Tuesdays at Thai Su restaurant in Berlin-Kreuzberg? Everybody will give you a warm welcome.

Friends help friends with learning German! Additionally to our regular meetings on Tuesdays, we are introducing a meeting on Mondays at a Berlin location to learn phrases and words to be able to communicate in German instantly and use it in German context. We are starting with the topics introducing oneself, buying something, asking the way and using numbers.

This is no commercial language course and absolutely free. It is there for friends getting assistance from friends. If you are interested in participating, contact berlinfriendsclub@arcor.de.

During our last Friends Club meeting, somebody brought this up:

Everybody knows the feeling that after a good round of walking, running or playing football or tennis, there is a funny feeling in your muscles which makes it nearly unable to move.

In German, the word is “Muskelkater”. But there is no use translating it literally, as for “Muskel” the English word is “muscle”, but the German word “Kater” means “tom cat” in English, That does not make any sense. Still, there is another meaning for “Kater” in English: “hangover”! And this gets us nearer to the meaning of “Muskelkater”, as you use “Kater” in German for any state of physical indisposition coming from a reason such as too much alcohol or physical exercise.

So, for the German word “Muskelkater” you would use “sore muscles” or “aching muscles”, as the LEO dictionary tells us. The Google translater only knows “ache”, which is fairly unspecific.

For more of these discussions, why don´t you join us at Berlin Friends Club? You will get a warm welcome and you can sure to spend some joyful, interesting hours each Tuesday.

See you then!

Last Tuesday, we talked about wintertime in Berlin. Currently, we have temperatures around freezing, but the sun is shining. From Friday on, so the forecast says, we will have storm, low temperatures and snow or sleet. Watch out!

Some of our friends from the south of the US, Japan, Brazil and South Africa are dreading the winter. They think it is cold enough, even now. Indeed, winter can impair public life quite a lot. In former winters, we had obstructions in public transport, such as the S-Bahn; automatic doors could not close and switches were frozen and couldn´t move. As to city streets, total chaos is likely if snow falls. People cannot reach work on time or not at all. Berlin is just not prepared for this sort of weather.

There is just one thing to do: Stay calm, don´t panic, and wait for better weather.

Have a nice and safe winter!

Why I like Berlin Friends Club:

  • Friends meet regularly every Tuesday without fail
  • It is absolutely free of charge
  • There is no formal membership
  • You can drop by whenever you feel like talking to friends
  • The nations of the world are in reach for all participants
  • Everybody is highly rated and welcome, no matter which nationality
  • Participants can communicate freely without any preset agenda
  • If you need assistance, it can be provided
  • You are at the source of direct information about Berlin and Germany and how to get along in an unknown country and city

This all and the cordial, welcoming atmosphere makes BERLIN FRIENDS CLUB so special in comparison to other clubs in the city. Come and find out!

Now that we have a new location at Thai Sushi at Checkpoint Charlie, we are able to accommodate more Friends on Tuesday evenings. Last meeting, we had 23 Friends from Sweden, the USA, Spain, the Ukraine, and Germany as well. It was very lively, with people talking and joking, getting to know each other and making friends. So let´s go on like that, having a good time.

Things like that may happen: The landlord family is giving up business and the owner takes over himself. “If you don´t want to have a meal, sit in the back”, 15 members squeezed at a table too small for feeling ok. One hour waiting for a pizza you have ordered. No taking orders for drinks.

We have decided that this is an atmosphere we are not willing to tolerate!

Sorry, dear landlord, but you have just lost 15 to 20 guests every Tuesday, and some turnover which you obviously can do without and are not worth.

Our principles are no membership fees, sitting and talking together, paying for own drinks and meals. We will not help making a landlord rich, but we are willing to spend some money. Landlords who think of making more money with us than casual guests won´t be supported by us.

So now, we have found a landlord who is happy to welcome us on Tuesdays. From next Tuiesday on, we meet at

Taisu Restaurant

Rudi-Dutschke-Str. 28

10969 Berlin-Kreuzberg.

This location is situated conveniently at Kochstr. U-Bahn-station, just around the corner of Checkpoint Charlie, side-to-side of the world famous Checkpoint Charlie Museum. You can´t miss it.

So come on, have a look and see what the new location is like.

See you all on Tuesday 10th Sept.

Last week cold and rainy – but today in Berlin: Sunshine, heat, best weather. The right atmosphere to really celebrate a FRIENDS meeting in the evening with a cold beer or whatever. So see you then!

The weather these days in Berlin is not very much summer-like! Few sun, many clouds, strong rain showers and thunderstorms… This makes it worth while  to gather together on Tuesday evenings to talk, make and meet friends. This goes also for those who are spending a few days or a holiday in Berlin. See you tonight and generally on Tuesdays, everybody will give you a warm, cordial welcome.
